Michigan State University Spartans Football History

For a decade and a half in the 20th century, the Michigan State Spartans dominated college football, winning national championships in 1951, 1952, 1955, 1957, 1965 and 1966. The last four of those titles were claimed under legendary coach Duffy Daugherty, who built a recruiting network in the segregated South and fielded one of the first racially integrated teams in the sport. The great Bubba Smith came from Texas and Jimmy Raye of North Carolina was the starting quarterback for the 1966 team, which played top-ranked Notre Dame to a 10-10 tie in what's known as the "Game of the Century." Daugherty spent 19 seasons as head coach of the Spartans, going 109-69-5 in his time in East Lansing. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1984.

Some of that glory was recaptured under Mark Dantonio, who coached the team from 2007 to 2019 and led the Spartans to bowl appearances in each of his first nine seasons, including a College Football Playoff appearance in 2015. In 2013, Michigan State went 13-1 and 8-0 in Big Ten play, punctuating the season with a 24-20 victory over Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

    Great venue, my team bad

    by deckape33 on 12/7/23Ford Field - Detroit

While I've seen several hoops events at Ford Field including the 2009 Final Four and 2003 Basketbowl, I hadn't seen a football game at Ford Field as I've been mostly "Lions-free"for about 25 years, the MSU v PSU game was an enjoyable experience, though my team MSU was horrific. I had great seats on the 35 yard line.

    view obstruction

by PSU on 11/30/23Ford Field - Detroit

I bought 5 tickets and 3 of them had such an obstructive view that it was impossible to enjoy the game. The tickets should have been labelled as having an obstructive view so I knew when I purchased them. Very disappointing.

    Good time, bad outcome

by Spartan Supporter on 11/28/23Ford Field - Detroit

The program obviously has a long way to go to rebuild, but the event was enjoyable until the opening kickoff. A lot of Spartan supporters that live in the Metro Detroit area, as well as students that were home for Thanksgiving. Excellent idea to have the game at Ford Field

Worst effort since the Muddy Waters era

by TSaxman on 11/28/23Ford Field - Detroit

Having been a fan of MSU football since even before I graduated in the late 1970s, I have learned the humility that comes from the uneven quality of college football and coaching talent. This year started promising, with some defensive improvement and a decent passing offense, and a 2-0 record against inferior programs. It collapsed with the revelation of coach Tucker's pathetic behavior. Unfortunately, interim coach Barnett could not keep the team focused. They gave away the Rutgers game with stupid mistakes, and also lost the Maryland and Minnesota games dubiously. They had the lead on Iowa after three quarters. There is no reason this squad could not have beaten every opponent except Washington, OSU, U of M and PSU, who were clearly superior teams. So, welcome coach Smith. Let's see what the transfer portal and NIL does to the 2024 Spartan football team.

    Great, Fun Experience!

by Dynomike on 11/28/23Ford Field - Detroit

I loved the fact that MSU partnered with Ford Field for an indoor game to end the season. Even though we lost the game, the experience was a lot of fun!

    Tucker Era over finally

by Crafty Sparty on 11/27/23Ford Field - Detroit

It’s been a long, nails on the chalkboard, unbearable season for Spartan football. Looking forward to a new era of football at Spartan Stadium.

    Almost a bowl game feel

by MSU 78 on 11/27/23Ford Field - Detroit

First, the game sucked unless you were a Penn State fan. But the venue was excellent. Ford Field was a joy to visit. So nice to not have to sit outdoors for a blowout loss. But by far, my biggest complaint? Where was Zeke the Frisbee Dog? Was he booked elsewhere? Why can’t the one creature who brings so much joy to Spartans everywhere not be included in the pseudo bowl game atmosphere? Band is great, dance squad was ok, but I don’t recall seeing cheerleaders or Zeke? Big miss in my mind. He’d have caught more passes in 2 minutes than the Spartans did the entire game. Please correct this next year. Go Green!!

Good environment for a late November game

by Rick on 11/27/23Ford Field - Detroit

Hard to beat an indoor FB game in late November. Parking was fine and really appreciate having the doors open 2 hours before the game so there was no rush in looking for the food court before the kickoff. Sorry MSU is having such a turbulent year and its affect on their performance.
