Arizona State Sun Devils Men's Basketball History

Arizona State fielded their first men's basketball team in 1911. From 1949 to 1957, the team was coached by Bill Kajikawa, a longtime part of the school's community who also once coached Arizona State baseball, as well as the freshman football team. Ned Wulk took over in 1957 and had a taste of success on the court, winning four times in the Border Conference in five seasons before moving to the Western Athletic Conference in 1962. The Sun Devils would add four WAC titles before ASU and the University of Arizona joined what was then known as the Pac-8 Conference in 1978.

NBA superstar James Harden played for two seasons under Herb Sendek at Arizona State before declaring for the 2009 NBA Draft. Other notable Sun Devils basketball players include Lafayette "Fat" Lever, and former NBA head coaches Lionel Hollins and Byron Scott. ASU has reached the NCAA Elite Eight three times, in 1961, 1963 and 1975, and the Sweet 16 twice. Since the Pac-10 became the Pac-12 in 2011, Arizona State has continued its tradition of success, with NIT appearances in 2013 and 2015 and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2014, 2018 and 2019.

    Total Fail

by Sparkle on 3/2/24Desert Financial Arena - Tempe

The worst venue I’ve been to. Not enough restrooms, food was terrible, the team was terrible and especially the student section.

We really enjoyed ourselves at the ASU game. It was a very intense game with loads of fans and rivalry chatting. The Ticketmaster process made getting tickets and entry very easy.

    Good game, good venue

In past years, the sound was so loud, it wanted to run me out. Just right this year. Pre-game hype is silly. Good band.

    It was ok

by Vince on 1/11/23Desert Financial Arena - Tempe

I bought some lower level seats on game day. Everything was fine with the purchase. The problem is the seats were next to some older guy who wasn’t happy that I was in “his” section. He went on and on about how much money he donates a bunch of money to the school’s athletic program and how these seats are always empty. He questioned where I got them and so on. He seemed to know a lot of people in and around this section. It was pretty awkward. I felt like such an outsider who wasn’t very welcome to be there. The gsme was fine but honestly, the arena is so small if I ever went again, I would just sit a little higher up.

Attended ASU v. University of Arizona game as a Christmas present for my son. I figured the state rivalry would have the place rocking. It did not disappoint. Had a great time and the correct team won!
