While some enjoy touring campus, listening to the band play at Bond Hall, grabbing a steak sandwich from the Knights of Columbus, other Notre Dame fans enjoy a different tradition on Game Day – tailgating.
Tailgating is not allowed after kick-off
Here are a few important things to know about tailgating before you pack up the car for Game Day:
Where to Go
Plan ahead and check out the different parking areas available around campus. Whether you have a parking pass or not, be sure to follow the signage to your destination lot. Parking attendants are plentiful on Game Day and are there to help. If you are traveling with multiple cars, make sure everyone arrives at the same time, as holding adjacent spots for others is not allowed. Also be sure each car has a parking pass, as one pass permits one vehicle into the lot.
What to Wear
With many tailgates beginning early and going up until game time, it’s also important to dress for the weather. Depending on the weather, sunscreen, ponchos, and layers can be important items to pack on Game Day!
Need to pick up some Irish gear? Head to any of the Notre Dame Shops, just west of Notre Dame Avenue, such as the Bookstore and the Varsity Shop, to grab all the Irish apparel you could ever want!
When planning for your tailgate, please note the following is NOT permitted:
Propane cylinders larger than 20 lbs
Amplified Sound – Speakers that stand alone, are excessively loud, or are connected to an amplifier
Open flames (i.e. fire pits)
Box trucks, motorcycles, over-sized vans
While on the campus of Notre Dame, selling of items is not permitted.
Safety and security rules will be strictly enforced and violators may be removed for failing to comply. Future ticket privileges may be revoked.
When planning for your tailgate, please note the following is permitted:
Propane grills are permitted, but gas cylinders must be under 20 lbs.
Have a question about a item that is not listed? Contact the game day staff at 1-800-ND1-FANS or [email protected] and we will be happy to assist you with your game weekend preparation.
What to Do
Green Your Tailgate
Remember to work to keep your tailgate green with help from the Office of Sustainability. Recycling bags are available in the parking lots for your convenience!
At the end of the day, you’re there for one simple reason – to enjoy Game Day! You take care of packing the car and grilling the burgers. Our Guest Services team, parking staff, police officers, and University staff will take care of the rest!

Take the Skyway exit off the Dan Ryan and remain on I-90 to the Indiana Toll Road, which merges with I-80. From the Illinois border, it is about 75 miles to Exit 77 (the South Bend/Notre Dame exit).
From the north: The University is located just south of the Indiana Toll Road (Interstate 80/90). Exit I-80/90 at Exit 77 and turn right onto Indiana 933. Make a left at the fourth stop light (Angela Boulevard), then turn left at the second stoplight (Eddy Street). Follow signs to visitor parking.
